Lord Beaverbrook played no small part in this hitherto unexplored passage of history and was on intimate terms with all the principal actors in the scenes he so vividly describes. Simply as the evidence of a key witness this account would be invaluable. Reinforced as it is by his unique collection of papers--including all those of Lloyd George and Bonar Law--it is a major contribution to our knowledge of the period. None the less he explicitly disclaims the role of a historian, describing his book as 'an attempt to tell of the shifting of political power as I saw and heard it at the time'. It is an intensely personal record, full of its author's wit and zest for life, sparkling with brilliant sketches of character--some of the great and famous, like Birkenhead and Curzon, others of the more shadowy but still formidable figures who lurked in the corridors of power. The whole is observed with an eye that never misses the significant or the ludicrous, and described with an epigrammatic economy that any historian should envy. Here is history as it really happened.
