Ives travelled to India as surgeon of the Kent, the flagship of Vice-Admiral Charles Watson, commander-in-chief in the East Indies. His return journey was by way of Basra, Baghdad, Mosul, Diarbekir, Bir, Aleppo, Latichea, Cyprus and Leghorn.
