This book is a documentary history of the problems and obsessions that led Germany to accept National Socialism, and the political and psychological means that Adolf Hitler used to keep Germans in his power. It is the eyewitness story of anti-Semitism and propaganda ; of 'natural selection' and 'race eugenics'; of Pan-Germanism and völkisch idealism.
But the book is also a description of the fanatical enthusiasm of dedicated Nazis, as revealed in their own writings. And it is a history, told in the words of the participiants, of ill-fated but sincere resistance to Nazism by churchmen, doctors and writers ; of the anti-Nazi underground; of Count von Stauffenberg's assassination plot.
Remak presents the letters, political tracts, memoirs, proclamations, and secret memos of Germans at every level of society, of every political and moral persuasion. Their first-hand accounts show the peculiar combination of events and attitudes that led to the creation, and the destruction, of the Third Reich.
