Many Indian thinkers, past and present, have examined consciousness states and their basis. This book looks at the development of one traditional formulation, the catuspad doctrine. This doctrine, particularly important in the well-known advaita (non-dual) Vedanta school, specifies three states (waking, dream, deep sleep), and an underlying fourth (turiya).
The analysis of the 'states of consciousness' scheme illumines two central concerns of Advaita thought (psychology and epistemology), while introducing a dramatically different (higher) valuation of non-waking states than is seen in most Western psychology.
The book contributes both to a better understanding of this Advaita states scheme and of Advaita by Western psychology.
