Nicholas Wollaston was a traveller without a purpose of writing a book about his travels: the desire to do that came later. Without plans, projects or objects, in a spirit of pure vagabondage ruled by curiosity, he began with a voyage to the Solomon Islands in April 1954. He ended at Istanbul in July 1955. Between these dates his accomodating temperament and his readiness to respond to caprice and chance led him into strange places and odd predicaments. From the Solomon Islands he took a cargo boat to Australia and hitch-hiked from Sydney to Adelaide, serving a spell of hard work on a sheep station. Where next? To anywhere but the obvious place. Who but he would have chosen to go to the Himalayas to climb four peaks of the 17000-19000 ft class? More or less on the level again, for six months he wandered unaccompanied through northern and central India. After afortnight in Goa he visited the independent State of Swat in northern Pakistan. His homeward journey was via Baluchistan and Persia at Kurdistan he was detained for ten days by Persian army and policie officials, who seemed reluctant to believe he was no more than an innocent traveller. Released by them, he made his way to Turkey and along the Black Sea Coast. And so home.

This book is all that a travel book should be. It also establishes a claim to be considered as a work of literature.
