Since its first publication in 1928 this work has been recognized as an important contribution to the history of the East. The first serious attempt to write the history of Burma after that of Phayre the author based his book on a mass of original sources. Burmese inscriptions and chronicles, together with English, Dutch and Portuguese sources and translated Chinese chronicles form the basis of the material from which he constructed an astonishingly interesting book which no student of Lido-China can afford to ignore.
After tracing the history of the early rulers of Burma which is still enwrapped in a web of mystery and legend the author gives some extraordinarily interesting information on the cultural history of Burma and the influence exercised upon it by India. The Burmese law was based upon the laws of Manu; Indian troops werer employed by some of the earlier kings; clear survivals of matriarchy and sex-worship may be compared with Indian parallels; Brahmans go from Benares in the eighteenth century as they may have gone in the first. Altogether, this is a most accurate and well constructed work and this new impression will be highly appreciated by all students of eastern history.
