Werner von Siemens' Recollections appeared in 1892 and became an immediate success. In an exciting, accessible narrative, one of the most important pioneers of the industrial age describes his life as an inventor and international businessman. In 1847. Siemens joined forces with Johann Georg Halske to found the "Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske." Major contracts like the construction of the first electrical telegraph line from Berlin to Frankfurt am Main quickly made the young company renowned throughout Europe. Numerous orders followed from both Germany and other countries. Significant innovations made it possible to build the telegraph line from London to Calcutta in 1870. The first submarine cable under the Atlantic followed a short time later. Werner von Siemens worked tirelessly to improve existing methods and invent new ones. it was his discovery of the dynamoelectric principle that made possible the nearly universal use of electricity that we enjoy today. It was his company that developed the first electric locomotive, the first electric streetcar, and the first electric elevator. Werner von Siemens' Recollections bring an era of technological pioneers vividly to life.
