Oakley gained widespread acclaim as part of the school of British feminists that emerged in the 1960s, and she has since become one of the most innovative feminist thinkers and social scientists writing today. In Experiments in Knowing she examines the way social scientists construct knowledge- through theory and through experimentation-while she also relates the fascinating history of social science itself, from Galileo and Florence Nightingale to current debates about consent, animal and patient rights in medical trials, and the effects of scientific intervention on our daily lives. Certain to generate considerable debate, the book goes on to argue for a new way of knowing. Oakley states that qualitative approaches in scientific research are habitually gendered as feminine, while quantitative methods are seen as masculine-a fact which has created a backlash in the sciences against experimental methods. Criticizing this categorization, as well as the outcomes of both techniques as they are applied in isolation, Oakley proposes to reconcile the two strains through an emancipatory, inclusive, and ultimately more truthful science.
