The author, who has an intimate acquaintance with the south-west corner of Asia Minor, deals with the west coastal region from Pergamum to Didyma, and inland to Heracleia and Sardis. Over seventy plates, as well as copious maps, plans and diagrams, illustrate the places described: Smyrna, once the most beautiful of cities; Pergamum, with its theatre, library and Asclepieum; Heracleia, romantically associated with Endymion and the Moon; Ephesus, Priene, Miletus and many others. The ancient buildings and their uses are surveyed; the history of the country and of individual cities and peoples is given in sufficient detail for the general reader.
