This collection of essays deals with the problems of equality and inequality from a variety of angles, the disciplines represented being law, economics, sociology, education and political science. The point of departure o the work is the contradiction between the principle of equality and the practice of inequality which is a general feature of the contemporary world. The essays explore conceptual and theoretical issues, and also present empirical material relating to India. The topics dealt with include income distribution, the agrarian class structure, protective discrimination, equality of educational opportunity and liberal and socialist theories of equality. While each essay has been written by a specialist in a particular discipline, the objective of the work as a whole has been to communicate specialized knowledge across the boundaries of disciplines.
The studies on which the volume is based were sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research.
