When the First World War broke out in 1914, the submarine was a new and untried weapon which attracted fierce criticism within the Royal Navy - especially from battleship officers - but the exploits of British submarines quickly captured public imagination - much the same as Battle of Britain pilots were to do in WWII. This is the story of men like Max Horton of E9 who destroyed the German cruiser HELA ; Noel Laurence of E1 who successfully attacked German shipping in the Baltic ; Martin Nasmith of E11 who took his submarine through the minefields of the narrow Dardanelles into Constantinople Harbour itself ; and Courtney Boyle who operated in the Sea of Marmora and wrought havoc on the enemy and was one of a number of submariners to be awarded the VC. Often overshadowed by the exploits of German U-boats, the deeds of British submarines are remarkable and too often forgotten owing to their 'Silent Service' reputation.
