Peter Vansittart brings all his wit and erudition, his ‘magpie mind’ and his genius for selection and juxtaposition to this, his third anthology - and he could not have chosen a richer subject. Letters, diaries, poems, prayers, epitaphs, memoirs, histories, journalism and conversation provide the raw material; out of them he constructs as illuminating a portrait of Britain’s rulers through the centuries as most of us are likely to have read. In much of it the monarchs speak for themselves: Alfred the Great bemoans his subjects’ lack of education while George V scoffs at modern art; Elizabeth I’s unfulfilled love for Essex contrasts poignantly with Victoria’s gratified contemplation of marital bliss. We learn with amazement that the beheading of Mary Queen of Scots was dismissed by her cousin as a ‘deplorable accident’; we are moved by Ann Boleyn’s spirit of forgiveness at her hour of death, impressed by young Edward Vi’s maturity and judgement. The telling phrase, the unexpected allusion: reputations are readjusted, and overall we receive the vivid impression of a monarchy constantly evolving and very much alive - with failures, yes, but considerable successes too - reflecting the strengths and weaknesses, quirks and foibles of those remarkable individuals who have borne its mantle through the years.
