Stephen Monk is a wealthy Anglo-American adolescent of thirty-six, who finds his wife Jane making love to another man at a Hollywood party, and characteristically runs away from the situation to take refuge at his birthplace near Philadelphia. But he finds no security there and is about to continue his flight when a sub-consciously willed accident breaks his thigh and imprisons him in a plaster cast for ten weeks. During this time he reflects on his life, his betrayel of his first wife, Elizabeth, his relationship with the attractive Michael, and the failure of his second marriage.
